“Thank you Virginia Arts Festival for arranging to have the Harlem String Quartet come to Deep Creek Middle. As a cellist who has played everything from Mozart to metal- I support a mission to diversify classical music! My students had a wonderful time listening to improvised Latin dances, a Mendelssohn string quartet and a final jazz number! The best part- my orchestra students rehearsed their music with wonderful musicality and POSTURE all day!”
Virginia Arts Festival Education Outreach: Artists in Residence
The Rhythm Project: Our Original Artists in Residence.
The Rhythm Project is a world percussion ensemble dedicated to the nurturing of self-esteem through individual and cooperative achievement. Virginia Arts Festival founded the Rhythm Project in 1996. Today, there are 10 groups, including the premier performing ensemble, the All-Stars. This community engagement program has grown to impact over 200 students each year. As a result, 99% of the students who have graduated as members of the All-Stars have continued onto college or the armed forces.

Middle School Orchestra Director
Elementary School Music Teacher
“The students and faculty at Salem Elementary would like to thank the Virginia Arts Festival for providing a wonderful assembly with Charlotte Blake Alston. Our students were engaged and entertained by Charlotte’s stories. Many of our students do not have the opportunity to hear a live storyteller and it was a challenge for them to visualize as Charlotte expertly delivered each story. What a necessary skill for developing readers! We are grateful that Charlotte provided this type of experience and hope that it encourages our students to discover the joy of reading and storytelling.”
Band Director at Northside Middle School
“The New England Conservatory Brass Quartet playing was top notch (of course) but also very appropriate to their audience. As a middle school urban teacher I so appreciate their careful programming. Thank them also for taking the time to personally answer questions, do some private demonstrations, and just hang out and talk with the students about their careers in music.”
12th Grade Student
“My favorite part of The Tempest was Ariel—not only did she greatly impress me with her acting, the simultaneous speaking with the flag twirlers was a great effect. The trip related to learning because of our constant study of Shakespeare and the relationships between music and performance.”
Teacher at Park Place Elementary School
“Before our students arrived to the cafeteria, they could already hear the lovely music, which they thought was a CD. The students were amazed by the performance so much so that they were silent for the entire hour. Members of the quartet were kind and patient. They answered all of the students’ questions and obliged their special song requests. They even took the time to sign a few autographs. All of our students take violin, so they enjoyed being able to see professionals. The quartet went over and beyond expectations. We felt like they truly enjoyed our students—something every school administrator and teacher hopes to feel.”
Teacher at Saint Patrick Catholic School
“I thought that the Quinteto Latino showed a perfect student-friendly assembly; the explanations were succinct, the music selections short enough to keep the students interested and entertained, and the emcee was skillful in his intros and patter. “
